The Retake Clock
Three failures puts you on a six-month bench, which for most candidates means a lost job offer or a delayed branch start. The rule changes the math on attempt three: do not book it until timed mocks say you are clearly above the cut. Attempt three is the one you cannot afford to gamble.
What a Failed Attempt Actually Costs
The $110 fee is the small part. Add 30 days of waiting, and for a candidate with an originator job lined up, a month of lost pipeline. The cheapest exam is the one you sit once, prepared. That arithmetic, not urgency, should set your next test date.
Read the Score Report Before You Restudy
Your result notice breaks performance out by domain. Restudy in order of the weakest heavy domain first: a weak showing in Loan Origination Activities or Federal Mortgage Laws costs far more points than the same weakness in a light domain, because they carry the most scored questions.
Most failed attempts were prepared for by rereading. Passing scores are built on timed question work: the exam tests recall under a clock, so practice has to look like the test. If your first prep was mostly reading, that is the single change to make.
Rules That Follow You After You Pass
Questions People Ask
How long do you have to wait to retake the SAFE test?
30 days between each of your first three attempts. After a third failure, every subsequent attempt requires a wait of at least 180 days.
How much does it cost to retake the SAFE test?
$110 per attempt (verified 2026-07). Each retake is a new test enrollment paid through NMLS, and enrollment fees are not refundable.
How many times can you take the SAFE test?
There is no lifetime cap on attempts. The constraint is the clock: 30 days between the first three attempts, then at least 180 days between every attempt after a third failure.
Do I have to redo my 20 hours of education to retake the test?
No. The pre-licensing education requirement stands once completed. A retake only requires a new test enrollment and the waiting period.
Does a passing SAFE test result expire?
A pass stays valid while you hold a license. If you go five years without holding an MLO license, the SAFE Act requires you to retest.
